Julianne’s Selfie with Senior Paul McConnell
As I enter the senior phase of my own life, I take inspiration from seniors like Paul McConnell who continue to actively engage with society, contributing to the community in which they live.
Paul and his family made Darwin their home 29 years ago and he has become a familiar and friendly face around our local neighbourhood. Since retiring from a career in education & training, Paul has maintained his service to the wider community by volunteering with a range of organisations such as the RAAF golf club and by being a regular donor for Lifeblood Australia.
On Saturday mornings Paul will often don a hi-vis “Vollie” vest for parkrun (a world-wide weekly event that depends on volunteers), lending a willing hand whenever and wherever needed, from wrangling finish tokens to providing encouragement and support to other runners and walkers.
Although his catchphrase “Go Pies!” might not be appreciated by everyone, Paul’s good nature and generous spirit make him a popular and well-respected member of the Darwin community.
