Eva’s Selfie with Senior Ali Pawero

Ali Pawero, or ‘Grandpa Ali’, has been a Territory resident since 1968.

The 84-year-old is a life member of the Northern Territory Badminton Association. Over the years, Grandpa Ali has mentored many young badminton players, sharing his wealth of knowledge with the next generation. His profound wisdom and strong passion for the sport has inspired many club members to continue playing badminton, and to remain active. Grandpa Ali is always eager to jump onto the court and give it his all, staying true to his lifelong motto, “Never Give Up!”. His contagious bright smile and clever wit shape the lively and inclusive environment at the badminton courts.

Outside of the badminton courts, Grandpa Ali also hosts community events in Darwin. During Eid, a religious event widely celebrated by Muslim and Islamic communities, Grandpa Ali generously opens his home to all members of the community regardless of their background. Even though preparation for this event takes hours, Grandpa Ali continues to celebrate it every year, a testament to his belief in the importance of maintaining strong community bonds and spreading kindness.

Through his sporting and volunteering endeavours, Grandpa Ali has truly changed the lives of many members of the Darwin community.
