Carol’s Selfie with Senior Helen Lister Reid

I became a volunteer for Ageing with Grace in June 2024. I believe I can make a difference to the elderly, to talk with, share stories, interests & company. July 2024, I met Helen an 86-year-old lady at her house we talked and got on well before I left Helen gave me a pile of readers digest books to donate to the school I work at. For the first few visits Helen kept forgetting my name so to help her remember I said “call me the book lady” we laughed but it worked. We can say silly things & talk freely about anything she trusted me and made me feel good and was always happy to see me.

Helen went to RDH hospital in September 2024 loves my visits & her face lights up and always has a beautiful smile. I would spoil her with flowers and short bread biscuits. If she wasn’t talkative, I would sit there as she fell asleep. My Mum made Helen a beautiful quilt she loves it. Now Helen has transferred to Palmerston Regional Hospital awaiting a nursing home.

I have become very fond of Helen, and I believe she feels the same about me.
