Marita’s Selfie with Senior Marlene Kranz

When Marlene and I met many years ago in Darwin, I was immediately impressed (as many are) by her fabulous personal style – she rocked up in her old Landrover, in an outfit of kimono silk in reds and blacks, handmade leather shoes, bright red lipstick and ears lined with pearl studs… an excellent sight amongst the thongs and beer bellies of the Top End. We hit it off straightaway, and over the years became good friends and now travel buddies. Marlene’s style is only the first impressive thing, though.

She has lived a life full of travel and colour; from early days in Germany in the punk scene there, where she raced motorbikes, and started her fashion career working for Vivienne Westwood. She has lived in numerous countries, travelled in deserts and mountains, worked as a master craftswoman and teacher with her label ‘Ideal Husband’ shoes, won awards, flown planes, loved crocodiles, worked as an advocate for migrants and volunteered her time for many people (and foster kittens). However, as a friend she inspires me with her ability to listen empathetically and to see through to the heart of a matter – each time offering the clarity I didn’t even know I needed. It’s an amazing thing. Here’s to many more rambling conversations at cafes!
