How My Father Has Inspired Me
My father, now 77, is a man of many quiet strengths: funny, patient, disciplined, and endlessly capable—a true Jack of all trades. But more than anything, he has been a constant, grounding presence in my life, and a lifelong source of inspiration.
I started long-distance running when I was 12 years old, and before I had a driver’s license, it was Dad who drove me to training—sometimes up to three times a week. Even getting up early on Sunday mornings to take me to training at Tiwi Gardens Oval, without complaint or hesitation. Looking back, those drives meant more than just transportation. They were his way of showing me that consistency matters, that support is powerful, and that commitment to your goals is something to be honoured, not just spoken about.
Dad didn’t just support my fitness journey—he lived his own. Even now, at 77, he keeps active every day: walking, doing weight exercises, and swimming laps. It’s not about looking fit, but feeling fit. Because of him, I learned that exercise isn’t just about physical health—it’s a vital part of mental well-being, too.
What inspires me even more is how he brings that same dedication and patience into every aspect of his life. He’s a wonderful grandfather—gentle, playful, and present. His humour lights up a room, and his ability to calmly solve problems has always made him our family’s steady anchor.
Another memory that has stuck with me since childhood is going with Dad to the blood donor centre. He would pick me up from primary school and take me along when he donated blood every few months. I was fascinated by the process and looked forward to the day I could do it, too. As soon as I was eligible and turned 16, I made my first donation. To date, I have made 106 blood and plasma donations. One donation can save up to three lives, and I owe that lifelong habit of giving to the example my father set.
Through his example, I’ve come to understand that discipline can be quiet, that love is often shown through small, consistent actions, and that a good laugh can carry you through almost anything.
I’m proud of the person he is—and grateful for the role he’s played in shaping who I have become. His example continues to guide me, and I hope I can inspire others the way he has inspired me.
