Eliane’s Selfie with Senior Lorenz Pilkington
Lorenz is my husband’s grandfather on his father’s side. Originally from Western Australia, he moved to the Northern Territory over 35 years ago. Most of his family lives interstate, and we feel fortunate to have had him as part of our family since we moved here seven years ago.
Lorenz is a loving and present “Old Pop” to my son, Enzo, 10 years old. He encourages Enzo to pursue his interests in drawing and music, being an accomplished guitar player himself.
At an age when he could have retired – Lorenz tried, but boredom and loneliness were not for him – he chose to return to work; he is a Palliative Care Liaison Officer and Educator at RDH. He dedicates his days to serving others, supporting patients and families facing life-threatening illnesses, and assisting the staff who work there. He brings his wisdom, life experience, and deep knowledge of Aboriginal culture to his work. He offers a compassionate ear and a safe space for people to express their emotions.
Lorenz’s compassion inspires me. His dedication to helping others and his ability to connect with people on a deep, emotional level make him a remarkable role model for all of us.
