RUNNER UP

Elspeth Harvey was born in Scotland in 1925, married in 1945 and boarded the SS Chitral to settle in Adelaide before coming to Darwin in 1966. Elspeth worked as an Aid at various preschools including, Larrakeyah, Moil and 11 years at Parap Preschool. She assisted the restoration of Darwins’ preschools after Cyclone Tracey.

Today Elspeth is nearly 99 years young, and has lived independently in Nightcliff for nearly 42 years. She still loves walking her dog, meeting and making people, and their doggies smile. In her twilight years she wants to enjoy family, friends, her dog and her beautiful garden.

I am inspired by Elspeths’ jovial nature, and zest for life. After sharing a glass or two of champagne with her a few years back, I asked what is your secret to staying so young and independent? A huge grin came across her bright face and she said in her playful Scottish accent “You gotta keep moving forward!”. So that’s what I aspire to do, just like Elspeth.
