Aaron’s Selfie with Senior Helen Menezies
I first met Helen whilst working in the Tactile Arts ceramics studio, where I was doing an art residency.
She is an avid ceramicist and regularly sells her work at local Darwin markets. We would chat together in the studio and she’d often prompt me with helpful ideas and guidance.
We call her the ‘Kiln Queen’ because she knows all the ins and out of firing ceramics and is there to assist anyone who needs it.
If she’s not in the studio she’s usually volunteering in the Tactile Arts office and is the only person I know with a Tactile Arts life membership.
When the dry season hit, Helen invited me to join her on the grass at Mindil Markets on Thursday nights where she gathers with a large group of friends.
Since then, we’ve continued to join her on Thursday nights for dinner, drinks, banter and sunset amongst the palms.
